BEACH REPLENISHMENT
Well, it’s here! The long promised and long awaited beach replenishment program has begun. Visitors enjoying the absolutely perfect weather during Bethany Beach’s “Second Season” can hardly believe their eyes. The sand rises above the railings along the boardwalk and surf is no longer visible to the eye. Viewed from the north, the new beach protrudes far to the east. Of course, some are very concerned about the loss of view. My website, http://www.bestofbethany.com/properties.html, proved links to both the articles and photographs.
When asked about the issue, my reply is the first priority must be to protect our beach. While I hope the town, DNREC, and the Army Corps of Engineers can find a solution to the height issues, the first priority remains the beach. I am convinced that ‘wall-to-wall’ people on the beaches this summer hurt housing demand and hurt values. Had that continued much longer, the damage to reputation would have been lasting.
What about the impact on values now? In the medium term, I would expect increased demand and rising values in the town itself, especially after people get a chance to see the change for themselves. It may take a season. South Bethany will also benefit, although it may take a few northeasters to convince buyers this is for real.
