DNREC to Remove Baker’s Channel Markers in Inland Bays

As part of an ongoing effort to repair and install channel markers throughout the Inland Bays, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) announced it will remove the floating channel markers from Baker’s Channel and will not replace them.

According to Josh Lippert, administrator of DNREC’s Shoreline and Waterway Management Section, more than half of the channel’s floating markers were lost during this winter’s storms. Many of the remaining markers were also pushed off station and no longer accurately indicate safe navigation routes, creating potential hazards for boaters.

Fenwick Island Approves Surf Bagel Overflow Parking

Surf Bagel has received approval from the Fenwick Island Town Council to move forward with an overflow parking lot across Essex Street from its Coastal Highway location, following concerns over traffic and parking issues during the shop’s first summer season in town.

The approval comes after the council adopted a new ordinance allowing businesses to apply for temporary parking lots for up to one year. Town officials and Surf Bagel management acknowledged that the business, which opened in winter 2025, experienced significant parking-related traffic problems last summer as customers circled nearby streets searching for spaces.

It's almost that time of year when our beaches become more densely populated and our furry friends must remain off the sand and boardwalk.  See below for the pet restrictions for Bethany Beach and surrounding areas!

BETHANY BEACH

• Dogs must be leashed and curbed at all times in Bethany Beach
• Dogs are prohibited on the beach and boardwalk from May 15 to Sept 30

SOUTH BETHANY

• No pets or other animals are permitted from May 15 to Oct 15

FENWICK ISLAND

• No pets or other animals are permitted on the beach at anytime between May 1 and Sept 30

DEWEY BEACH

• From the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through the Sunday following Labor Day, dogs are only permitted on the beach…

OVPD teaches bicycle safety at LB

Third-grade students at Lord Baltimore Elementary School combined fun and learning during a Bike Safety Rodeo hosted by the Ocean View Police Department on April 16.

Organized in partnership with DelDOT, the event began with a classroom presentation led by OVPD Sgt. Rhys Bradshaw. He taught students key bicycle safety basics, including the importance of wearing properly fitted helmets.

Bradshaw introduced the “ABCs” of bike safety—checking air, brakes and chain—and reviewed essential rules of the road for young riders.

Bethany flowers in full spring

Bethany Beach’s colorful median flowers have become “a real crowd-pleaser,” Mayor Ron Calef said during this week’s Town Council meeting, expressing appreciation for Public Works staff and their “spectacular tulips and displays.”

Calef noted that both residents and visitors have been stopping to admire and photograph the displays, calling the response “incredible.” He also thanked Public Works employees for preparing the town for the busy summer season by powerwashing the bandstand and refurbishing boardwalk benches. Additional support is expected from DNREC workers, who are assisting with dune crossover maintenance and reconstruction.

Additional Crosswalks on Coastal Highway and Garfield Parkway

Work is expected to begin soon on new pedestrian crosswalks at the intersection of Coastal Highway and Garfield Parkway, according to the town’s newsletter. The intersection is a busy corridor that experiences heavy foot and vehicle traffic, particularly during the summer months.

The project will include installing a new pedestrian crosswalk on the north side of the intersection, expanding access in an area where crossing options have been limited. Residents say the current setup has created challenges for pedestrians.

“It’s really difficult as a pedestrian, and I really worry about families, especially with small children,” said Michaela Greene.

Bethany Bandstand Unveils 2026 Seaside Concert Series Lineup

Summer is right around the corner, and we can't wait for the Town of Bethany Beach to begin hosting the Seaside Concert Series!  Bandstand performances take place on Thursday and Saturday nights in the summer and Friday and Saturday nights in September and October.  Summer Wednesdays will feature "Kids Nights" in July and the occasional rain date.

Summer concerts typically begin at 7:30 p.m.  Fall concerts will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Shows offer something for everyone - from rock and pop to country, jazz, and anything in between.  Bench seating is provided free of charge, but it is limited. Since seating is first-come first-served, we ask that you don't save full benches in the hours leading up to show times.  Bringing your own chairs is encouraged!

County Council Reviews Land-Use

The Sussex County Council this week introduced the first ordinances stemming from recommendations made by its Land Use Reform Working Group.

At the Tuesday, March 10 council meeting, Assistant County Attorney Vince Robinson said the introductions mark the first step in acting on roughly 20 recommendations developed by the group. The council created the working group last year to review land-use trends in Sussex County and recommend possible changes to the county code and Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

Fenwick Island to consider parking on vacant commercial lots

Officials in Fenwick Island are scheduled to hold a first reading Friday on a proposed amendment that would allow parking on certain unimproved lots in the town’s commercial district. The proposal comes in response to ongoing parking issues near Surf Bagel.

Surf Bagel opened its Fenwick Island location in November 2024 and has experienced consistent demand, especially during the peak summer season. The restaurant has 29 on-site parking spaces, which President Matt Patton said have occasionally been insufficient to accommodate customer traffic.

“They're going to get those bagels no matter what,” Patton said.

Indian River Power Plant revival talks underway

Delaware Republican senators say they are actively exploring the possibility of reopening the long-shuttered Indian River Power Plant, citing increasing electricity demand and concerns about grid reliability.

State Sens. Brian Pettyjohn and Gerald Hocker confirmed they are in discussions with energy and utility stakeholders to evaluate whether restarting the Dagsboro facility is feasible. The plant officially ceased operations last February after 68 years of service.
