DelDOT lowers speed limits on Coastal Highway from Dewey Beach to Maryland

DelDOT is rolling out speed limit changes along Coastal Highway from Dewey Beach to the Delaware/Maryland state line, with the first changes already in effect between Dewey Beach and Fred Hudson Road as of April 21. Additional signs will be updated Tuesday. DelDOT says the changes "were primarily prompted by concerns about speeding from the local communities and the Coalition for a Safer North Bethany due to a rising number of crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists."

Speed limits are being reduced in multiple areas, depending on direction and location. Here's a breakdown of the changes:

  • Southbound from Dewey Beach to about Conquest Road
    • 55 mph changes to 35 mph
    • 55 mph changes to 50 mph
  • Northbound from just before Conquest road to Dewey Beach
    • 55 mph changes to 50 mph
    • 35 mph at Keybox Road
  • Southbound Old Inlet Bait & Tackle to the south side of the Charles W. Cullen Memorial Bridge
    • 55 mph changes to 50 mph
    • A pedestrian/bicyclist crossing 
  • Northbound from the south side of the Charles W. Cullen Memorial Bridge to the Old Inlet Bait & Tackle 
    • 55 mph changes to 50 mph
  • Southbound from the south side of the Charles W. Cullen Memorial Bridge to Collins Road
    • 55 mph changes to 45 mph 
  • Northbound from Collins Road to just past Dune Road
    • 45 mph stay in place
    • 55 mph change to 45 mph
    • 50 mph sign added 
  • Southbound in Bethany Beach/South Bethany
    • 55 mph changes to 50 mph 
  • Northbound in Bethany Beach/South Bethany
    • 35 mph stay in place
  • Northbound Narrows Road to Maryland line
    • 55 mph changes to 50 mph
    • 45 mph stay in place
    • 35 mph stay in place
  • Southbound Maryland line to Narrows Road
    • 35 mph stay in place
    • 45 mph added near Lewes Street
    • 55 mph changes to 50 mph
