DNREC officials announced on Friday, July 11, that workers will be testing important beach restoration equipment in Delaware Seashore State Park at the Indian River Inlet from July 14 through Aug. 6.  Beachgoers and swimmers are being advised to stay out of marked hazard zones on the beach and in the water. The work involves moving large volumes of sand, which can create unstable conditions and dangerous rip currents, officials warned.

This work has begun in an effort to keep ocean water from breaching the dunes and spilling onto the Indian River Inlet bridge, leaving motorists unable to continue North to Dewey Beach and Rehoboth Beach.  Twice last year, alone, we have experienced a dune breach that resulted in lane closures and shut downs of Northbound highway access.  The project was awarded $10 million in State funding as well as $15 million in Federal funding.
