Happy New Year! As we reflect on 2022, you might recall that the surge in real estate activity we felt in 2020 and 2021 carried into the first quarter of 2022 and then slowed in the second quarter. There was moderate activity in the second half of the year. The South Bethany Town Council has allocated $50,000 in funding for the removal of algae blooms from the town’s canals. The proposed cleanup project would take place in April and May of 2023 by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). However, if DNREC is unable to complete the work, then the back-up plan is to negotiate a contract with Solitude Lake Management. The Town's Public Works Department would also provide resources to assist with the project. The algae blooms would be relocated to a state park such as the Salt Pond or Fresh Pond near the Fred Hudson Road, subject to DNREC approval.

The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) recently announced a $4.685 million project to dredge the main channel of White Creek and a short stretch of the Assawoman Canal northwest of Bethany Beach.  The DNREC project will remove approximately 70,000 cubic yards of sediment, which has built up over the years, to improve boating safety and navigation along the waterways. The sediment that is removed will be recycled and used to restore the salt marsh in the Assawoman Wildlife Area.

Work will begin in January 2023 and is expected to be completed by March 31, 2023.
