On June 24, 2022, the Fenwick Island town council unanimously voted to reinstate the two-year moratorium on new hotel construction which was set to expire on July 24, 2022.  The ban was initially implemented in 2016 following strong community opposition to an ordinance change allowing the expansion of the former Sands Motel from 38 rooms to 65 rooms.  The extension will be in effect through July 2024 and will allow time for studies on the long-term impacts of new hotel construction to the town.
